Office Envy's First Rule: Focus on Foliage, Flowers

In last night's MBA marketing midterm we were asked to repeat back the professor's personal formulation of the first four rules of marketing: 1) Focus; 2) Focus; 3) Focus; and 4) Everything's relative.

Well, it just so happens that we here at Office Envy have our own variation on that rule when it comes to creating an enjoyable office eco-system: Focus, Focus, Focus on foliage, flowers and green plant life at large.

We love our signature pink bloom which has graced our desk for four years and often elicits the question, "how do you get it to last so long?" To which we offer the simple answer, "magic", by which of course we mean "Target" which is where we bought the fake flower about six years ago.

We also have a larger, whiter companion for our favorite pink desk-mate. This one was purchased at Pier 1, although every time we walk past Pottery Barn Bed and Bath we ogle their selection as well.Fake flowers are fine and delightful in an understated sort of way, but we've always had a secret crush on indoor foliage schemes of larger proportions as well. It's not the idea of a garden itself -- since outdoor gardens have never really peaked our interest -- it's the whimsy of what should be outside being inside (indoor fountains and other bodies of water are included in this category).

About a year ago we submitted a proposal to our day job's real estate services department suggesting that this cold, unusable space be transformed into a "garden in the sky" - since it's architecturally a sky bridge.

Here's what it looked like and here was the plan we submitted for it:

You've probably gathered that the plan wasn't approved. Which is a shame because studies show that foliage is more vital to office life than caffeine. Well, at least one study showed it, but it sounded right to us when we read it on EcoNews. We'll let you come to your own conclusion.

So the Garden in the Sky plan was nixed but we recently did come across a small scale version of it in the new 5th floor wing of our office:
When Office Envy has office space of our very own - you can be sure that indoor foliage will factor in to the floorplan in a significant way. We'll be looking to the likes of companies like Aspen Innerscapes, a full service interior plant design company, to maintain our space. After all, if we're going to be green with envy anyway, we might as well get the benefits of some fresh oxygen to go along with it.
